In front of the second-largest crowd at Yurcak Field this season, Sky Blue FC looked to avenge their only loss of the season, a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Flash back on May 1st. The Flash had other plans which included extending their unbeaten streak to five matches and gaining a much needed three points in the standings.
The Flash go on the board early with a 4th minute goal by Samantha Kerr. Wambach started the attack going 1v1 against Sky Blue FC’s keeper Brittany Cameron. After a few moves she sent the ball to the far post and found Kerr who put it into the back of the net to give the Flash a 1-0 lead.
Carli Lloyd gave the Flash a 2-0 lead heading into the half after rocketing a shot past Cameron in stoppage time. The goal with Lloyd’s first of the season and also occurred on the campus of her alma matter, Rutgers University.
In the 83rd minute, Kerr thanked Wambach for the first half goal by setting up her for a goal of her own. The play started with Lloyd gaining possession of the ball at midfield and finding Kerr making a run up top. Kerr then slide a perfect pass to a streaking Wambach in front of goal who lunged and was able to slide the ball past Cameron to give Sky Blue FC a 3-0 lead and securing the win.
Adrianna Franch (WNY) earned her first shutout of the season and had a very active night in goal with five saves including stopping a point-blank shot from Kelley O’Hara in the 23rd minute.
With the win, the Flash moved into third place in the league, two points ahead of the Boston Breakers. The win also extends the Flash’s unbeaten streak to five matches leading all way back to April 27th and a 2-1 loss to the Boston Breakers. Next up for the Flash is a match against the Washington Spirit on Saturday, June 15th.
Even with the loss, Sky Blue FC remains tied with the Portland Thorns FC at the top of the table with 22 points. Sky Blue FC heads to Dilboy Stadium next Sunday with a match-up against the fourth place Boston Breakers.
