Thorns waive defender Jazmyne Avant, sign defender Casey Ramirez
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Thorns announced Thursday that they have waived defender Jazmyne Avant
“Jazmyne worked hard during her time with the Thorns. We would like to thank her for her contributions to the club and we wish her the best in her future endeavors,” said head coach Cindy Parlow Cone.
Avant made four appearances for the Thorns, making two starts. Avant will be placed on waivers and will then be available for signing as a free agent.
Earlier this week, the Thorns accounted both the signing of forward Tiffany Weimer and a season-ending injury to starting defensive midfielder Becky Edwards. Allocated midfielder Tobin Heath is also expected to join the Thorns following international duty with the United States Women’s National Team.
The Thorns also announced the signing defender Casey Ramirez.
Casey Ramirez joins Fortuna Hjørring teammate Weimer in Portland
“Casey is a very good attacking outside back or midfielder,” Cone said. “She is very difficult to beat one-on-one and is great at helping to build the attack out of the back.”
Ramirez, 23, recently completed the European season with Fortuna Hjørring of the Danish Elitedivisionen, helping lead her team to the Round of 16 in the 2012/13 UEFA Women’s Champions League and a second-place finish in domestic play.
Ramirez played collegiately at Syracuse University, where she made 75 appearances (66 starts), scoring 3 goals and 4 assists. Ramirez also played for the Ottawa Fury of the USL W-League from 2010-2012, helping lead the Fury to three division titles, a conference title, and the 2012 W-League Championship, where she appeared at right back.
