PORTLAND, Ore. – Following a busy offseason that saw several trades, signings, and a new coaching staff, the reigning NWSL Champion Portland Thorns have announced their roster to open the season.

Eight players, defenders Nikki Marshall and Rachel Van Hollebeke, midfielders Angie Kerr, Allie Long, Mana Shim, and Tobin Heath, and forwards Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair, remain from the 2013 side, with Marshall and Shim leaving and then returning over the offseason.

Headlining the acquisitions for the Thorns are current FIFA Women’s Player of the Year and German captain goalkeeper Nadine Angerer, Spanish captain midfielder Veronica Boquete, United States international midfielder Amber Brooks, and Australian international defender Stephanie Catley.

Joining Angerer between the posts is goalkeeper Michele Betos, who was acquired via trade with Boston. Betos appeared last season for Seattle, making 7 starts.

Acquired from Seattle and previously playing in Japan for INAC Kobe, Rebecca Moros adds an experienced outside back to the Thorns defense, while Emily Menges (Georgetown) and Courtney Niemic (La Salle) bring youth and versatility from the college ranks. Rounding out the newcomers in the defense is the experienced Katarina Tarr, who joins the Thorns following four seasons abroad in Germany and Catley, a dangerous and speedy outside back.

Boquete, Brooks (2013 Draft Pick) and Sinead Farrley (trade with FC Kansas City), bring international experience and attacking flair to the attack. Acquired along with Boquete in a trade from Western New York, Sarah Huffman gives the Thorns another versatile midfield option for the Thorns.

Jackie Acevedo (Allocated Player from Mexico) and Jessica McDonald (trade with Seattle) give the Thorns speedy attacking options while Morgan recovers from her injury and Elisabeth Sullivan (Mississippi State) provides depth.

Currently the Thorns have 19 players on the active roster, with Boquete, Catley, and Heath joining the squad following the completion of international commitments.
