League leaders Sky Blue FC mounted an impressive comeback on a wet Wednesday night at Yurcak Field to force a 2-2 draw with FC Kansas City.
With forward Lisa De Vanna away on national team duty, Sky Blue was held scoreless through the first 85 minutes of the match. Kansas City opened their lead in the 14th minute after SBFC defender Christie Rampone slipped on the wet turf. FCKC’s Erika Tymrak pounced on the loose ball and scored to put the Blues ahead 1-0.
Midfielder Lauren Cheney added to the FCKC lead in the 75th minute with her third goal in two matches. Cheney received a pass in the midfield and charged into the box past her first defender. Some quick footwork allowed her to cut to the right of two additional SBFC defenders and deliver a shot past Cameron and inside the left post.
An FCKC foul in the 85th minute provided SBFC a late opportunity to cut into the lead. Rampone’s free kick reached the box in the air and took a strange bounce off the turf and over the heads of the FCKC defense. SBFC’s Kelley O’Hara reached the ball first and quickly crossed to teammate Monica Ocampo. A slight tap from Ocampo cut FCKC’s lead in half to 2-1.
Desperate for the equalizer in stoppage time, Sky Blue pushed numbers forward and located Ocampo again. Katy Freels sent the ball into the box from distance and found Ocampo on the end of it. A well-timed strike from a tough angle pushed the ball between the right post and a flat-footed Nicole Barnhart, tying the match at 2-2 in the final seconds of stoppage time.
“I’m really happy for the result and the work I did with my teammates,” Ocampo said after the win. “My first thought when I went in was try to tie or win the game.
The additional point earned by each team pushed Sky Blue (8-2-3, 27 pts.) into standalone first and FCKC (6-4-2, 20 pts.) into standalone third.
FCKC returns home for their third match in 8 days when they face Portland on Sunday at 3:10pm CT. Sky Blue will face the 5th place Boston Breakers at 6:30pm ET at Yurcak Field.
