Sky Blue FC made two big announcements today naming Erwin van Bennekom as assistant coach and Jersey Sky Blues (WPSL Elite) as the club’s official reserve team.

“I am thrilled to join the Sky Blue FC organization and to start working alongside Jim Gabarra,” van Bennekom said. “The opportunity to work with some of the best players in the world is an honor and something I’ve been aspiring towards for several years. I can’t wait to get started on the field and help continuing the growth of Sky Blue FC and the National Women’s Soccer League.”

Prior to joining Sky Blue FC and the Jersey Sky Blues, Van Bennekom spent two years coaching in the WPSL as the Head Coach for the Jersey Select and the New Jersey Blaze.

Along with being the assistant coach for Sky Blue FC, van Bennekom will concurrently hold the role of co-Head Coach for the Jersey Sky Blues.

“I am excited to be leading the [Jersey Sky Blues] into this new level”, said van Bennekom, who had previously been approached to coach the Magic in the WPSL. “The WPSL Elite is an incredible level and a tremendous challenge, but this area is a hotbed of talent, and I’m sure that we can compete.”

The Jersey Sky Blues (previously known as Millburn Magic and Jersey Blues FC) joined the WPSL Elite for the 2013 after playing in the WPSL since 2008.

NOTE: Even though Sky Blue FC released their announcement today, it looks like this partnership and coaching addition was originally announced in late December.
