In what NBCSports.com ProSoccerTalk is declaring the “NWSL Game of the Week,” the first place Sky Blue FC squad will head to Verizon Wireless Field to take on third place (and currently undefeated at home) FC Kansas City this Saturday evening.

Last week when it was announced that Becky Sauerbrunn would sit out their match against Boston due to an injury, many assumed FCKC would not be able to contain the attacking force of the Breakers. However, the back line did well to shut down Boston’s offense on several occasions – and did not concede a single goal. Lauren Sesselmann continues to perform above her maximum and shuts down crucial plays such as last week when she fended off Sydney Leroux inside the box.

This week the FCKC back line will have to maintain a cool head because Lisa De Vanna is well known for her speedy runs into the box and can win free kicks if she is dispossessed in an aggressive manner. De Vanna will test the back line early on but she may not be joined up top by Kelley O’Hara. Considering that FCKC will start with their two best strikers, Lauren Cheney and Renae Cuellar, SBFC will need to rely on the intuitive O’Hara to close down the FCKC offense.

With O’Hara likely starting in defense, De Vanna will need to find a way to create magic up front for SBFC. Danesha Adams is a strong forward but she is easily dispossessed. Therefore, De Vanna needs to work with midfielders Sophie Schmidt and Katy Freels. Both of these midfielders are strong in attacking and win possession quickly. Freels is a challenging player to dispossess and therefore will be key in setting up offensive plays.
