For two teams desperate for a win to keep their playoff chances alive, it looked as if neither was up for the challenge during the first half of their match on Wednesday. That all changed when the second half whistle blew.
The Reign took the lead in the 54th minute off a goal from Jessica McDonald. Acquired earlier in the week from the Chicago Red Stars, McDonald took a cross from teammate Christine Nairn and slid the ball past Breakers keeper Alyssa Naeher to put the Reign up 1-0.
Ten minutes later the Breakers equalized the match off the foot of Sydney Leroux.
Heather O’Reilly took one of her patented runs to the box and then sent a dangerous cross in front of goal that deflected off Reign defender Kaylyn Kyle and to the feet of Leroux who sent the ball past Reign’s keeper Hope Solo to tie the match at 1-1. The goal was Leroux’s eighth of the season, tied for the league-lead with FC Kansas City’s Lauren Cheney.
The draw brings the Breakers record to 4-5-4 (16 points) and remain in fifth place. Next up for Boston is a Saturday match-up against second place Portland Thorns FC.
Seattle moved to 2-9-3 (9 points) on the season, just six points behind sixth place Chicago Red Stars. The Reign will hit the pitch next on July 11th against the Western New York Flash. Kick is scheduled for 10:00pm EDT.
NOTE: Kyle and Jessica Fishlock both received their league-leading fourth yellow cards of the season. The next yellow card for either player will result in a suspension as they would reach the five yellow card limit.
