The fireworks started early for the Chicago Red Stars on Thursday as they defeated fourth place Western New York Flash 1-0 to move within seven points of the final playoff spot.
In front of one of their largest crowds of the season (2,064), the Red Stars managed to limit the Flash to a single shot on goal while getting the match winning goal from Lori Chalupny in the 58th minute.
“Taryn (Hemmings) made one of her dashing runs forward, that she is so good at,” said Chalupny of the lead-up to her goal. “Inka got the ball on frame and it was one of those easy ones (for me). I just tried to get something on it.”
The Red Stars moved to 4-6-3 (15pts) on the season and are just a point behind fifth-place Boston Breakers and just seven points out of the playoffs. Chicago heads to the Maryland Soccerplex on July 10th to take on the Washington Spirit.
The loss snapped the Western New York Flash’s league-record of nine match undefeated streak and moved them to 6-3-4 (22pts), two points behind third place FC Kansas City who they play this Sunday at 4:10pm EDT in KC.
