The Western New York Flash picked up where they left off two weeks ago, with a 2-1 win over the Chicago Red Stars on Friday night. Chicago captian Lori Chalupny tallied for the Red Stars in the 52nd minute, while Abby Wambach and McCall Zerboni each had second half goals for the Flash.
The second half may have had all the goals but the first half was centered on the standout performance of Taylor Vancil who made her NWSL debut in goal for the Red Stars. Vancil took the place of an injured Erin McLeod, making several key saves and coming way off her line to deny Wambach and Samantha Kerr in the first half.
With the solid play of Vancil in the back, Chicago thought they had a chance to capture their first win of the season, especially after the 52nd minute goal by their captain that put them up 1-0. With the Flash committing numbers forward, Chalupny capitalized on a quick counterattack off a pass by Jessica McDonald, that she poked past Flash keeper Brittany Cameron.
The Flash were able to find an equalizer two minutes later off a classic Abby Wambach goal. Brittany Taylor floated a ball into the 18 where an unmarked Wambach made the diving header to tie the game at 1-1.
From there the game opened up with both teams pushing for a second goal. The Flash would be the ones to get it in the 66th minute off a corner. Taylor made her second assist of the night when her corner was directed in off the head of Zerboni.
The Red Stars had chances for the late goal but were unable to convert, allowing the Flash to capture their third straight win.
Flash hope to carry the momentum from this win as they begin a four game road trip starting with the Boston Breakers Wednesday. The Chicago Red Stars will travel to JELD-WEN Field to take on the Portland Thorns for the third time this season.
Additional Game Notes:
