Boston Breakers vs. WNY Flash – Aug. 17, 2013

Breakers defender Rhian Wilkinson:

(On her goal) I didn’t see much. The ball came in on a corner, I think Joanna Lohman got a touch and it fell right in front of me. I was fortunate — I was in the right place at the right time and I was very glad to have gotten it in.

(Told it looked like there was a deflection) OK. (laughs) I actually don’t know what happened. But I’m glad I was in the right place at the right time. It helped us get a bit of momentum after a really hard first half, we were on the back foot so it sort of changed the momentum.

(On finishing out the season strong) We’re very proud to be wearing the Boston Breakers shirt and we’ve talked about that for a long time now, to represent the team as best we can. We’ve been out (of the playoffs) for four games now, and every time we’ve hit the field, it’s about representing our team with pride and that’s what we tried to do.

Flash forward Samantha Kerr:

(On her goal) I think Abby just headed it over so my only option really was to volley it, so I just hit it and luckily for me I hit it in.

(On hosting a semifinal) We’ve always been one of the teams that we thought can have a home semifinal and to do it tonight is a credit to the team and it gives us a bit of confident moving into the semifinal, so we’re excited

Flash forward Abby Wambach:

(On her goal) It was a free kick and it was outside shooting range, so I told Brit – it was literally straight up the middle of the field – but I told Brittany Taylor just to kick it right at the goalkeeper, just a little short. She hit it perfectly. It came off actually the side of my face. From that perspective it’s not a clinical finish, but it’s the only way I think it probably would’ve gone in the goal.

(On why they have such a good record at home) I think a lot of things. I think we all have a routine living where we live. I think playing in front of a home crowd really does give us that added energy that we need. And the field, we’re comfortable with this field. Boston’s field is so small and narrow, this is a huge soccer artificial turf field so it allows us to play the kind of game we want to play.

(On her assist) The ball goes up in the air and I’m just trying to head in the direction of where my teammate Sammy (Kerr) is. I don’t even know if it hit the ground, it was a fantastic finish. I give her all the credit in the world because it wasn’t an easy ball to take.

Flash coach Aaran Lines:

(On the game) I thought we started the game very brightly. We were very good  the first 35 minutes. Lost a little bit of our way going into the half. Had planned to come out and start the second half the way that we started the first half. Didn’t quite happen that way. Weathered the storm for a little while, but I think we had a few good opportunities to put it beyond reach. Didn’t manage that, but still brought it over the distance. Just happy with the result. The effort was there but maybe needed to be a bit more clinical in the final third.

(On taking first place) Barring Portland goes into double digits, we’ll be hosting a semifinal here, which is the goal and what we wanted to accomplish tonight. The ladies set out and accomplished that so very excited to have a semifinal playoff game here in Rochester, NY. Very exciting for the area, for the fans and hopefully we get a really good attendance.
