On Friday, the Washington Spirit head to Sahlen’s Stadium to take on the Western New York Flash, following a 2-0 loss against FC Kansas City. As for the Flash, this is their second game at home following a 1-1 draw against the Seattle Reign. The Flash will look to extend their eight game unbeaten streak.
What to Expect: This will be the third match between the Flash and the Spirit. The prior two games have resulted in a 2-0 victory for the Flash as well as a 1-1 draw (goals from Matheson and Kerr). Heading into this match, it’s expected that Washington’s leading scorer Diana Matheson will be out due to an ankle injury. In her absence, the Spirit will look to Lori Lindsey, Tiffany McCarty, Tori Huster, and German international Conny Pohlers to take control offensively.
As for the Flash, they will be without Samantha Kerr as well as without forward Adriana, as both have returned to fulfill their duties with their respective national teams. With that being said, the Flash will look to the integral attacking players of Carli Lloyd, Vicki DiMartino, Veronica Perez, and one of the leading NWSL goal scorers Abby Wambach (just to name a few) to take charge.
The Spirit are currently experiencing a 366-minute span in which they have not scored.
This game will also be a matchup between the third and fourth place goalkeepers in saves. Franch of the Flash has tallied 44 saves thus far where Harris of the Spirit (the week 2 and 11 MVP) has 37.
Prediction: 1-0 in favor of the WNY Flash with a goal by Abby Wambach
