Congratulations to Seattle Reign FC’s back line on being voted NWSL Fans’ Choice MVP for Week 7.
Coming into their match against the Portland Thorns FC, the Reign had given up an average of eight shots on goal and two goals per match in their first seven matches and the Thorns offense had very similar numbers.
Enter Hope Solo.
The Reign’s back line got a huge boost with the return of Solo to the starting XI. As USWNT member Amy LePeilbet (CHI) mentioned during the broadcast, “… (Hope) is always at the top of her game and she helps you be your best … she makes sure you are in the right position and when you are not she lets you know it but when you are and you get your job done she is the first to tell you great job.”
LePeilbet was dead-on as the Reign’s back line was playing their best match of the young season only giving up three shots on goal to the Thorns and limiting Christine Sinclair and Alex Morgan to a single shot on goal each.
The only blemish on the Reign’s back line was an unwarranted penalty kick awarded (and successfully converted) in the 84th minute.
Final Voting Results for Week 7:
1) Seattle Reign FC Defense
2) Lianne Sanderson
3) Brittany Taylor
