Congratulations to FC Kansas City’s Lauren Cheney for winning the NWSL Fan Vote MVP for Week 3 in the closest voting so far this season. Cheney beat out Portland Thorns FC’s Alex Morgan by the narrowest of margins. Morgan took control of the Facebook voting whereas Cheney won the Twitter voting and the overall voting title.
On a chilly and rainy night in Kansas City, Cheney seemed to be in complete control on and off the ball. In the 15th minute Cheney lobbed a perfectly timed pass to Renae Cuellar who had a step on the defender but put the shot wide-right.
In the 21st minute Cheney took the corner and, even though she told reporters after the match her plan was to score on the kick, placed it perfectly for Sinead Farrelly to head it home to give FCKC a 1-0 lead.
Cheney almost got on the board herself in the 49th minute as she rocketed a free kick from about 20 yards out but a diving Michelle Betos was able to get her hands on the ball and deny the goal.
In the 71st minute Cheney was at it again, this time launching a ball almost 30 yards to find a streaking Cuellar who outran two defenders and placed the ball perfectly into the lower right corner of the net to put FCKC up for good.
Here are a couple highlights from Cheney’s Friday night under the lights in Kansas City:
