The NWSL Disciplinary Committee has suspended Western New York Flash’s Carli Lloyd for two matches for “use of excessive force in an incident involving Chicago Red Stars midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo.”
Lloyd released a statement shortly after the suspension became public apologizing to DiBernardo:
“My action in the game against the Chicago Red Stars was not acceptable and is inexcusable. I am very disappointed in myself and this is a lesson I will learn from. I want to apologize to Vanessa, the Red Stars, my teammates, the WNY Flash organization and the NWSL fans.”
Lloyd’s suspension will result in her missing the Flash’s home opener this weekend against the Portland Thorns FC and the May 11th match versus Sky Blue FC. Since Lloyd will be with the USWNT when her club plays FC Kansas City on May 7th, that match is not considered as part of the two-match suspension.
