A day before the NWSL was set to begin, the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FMF) wrote an article to show their support not only for the new league but also for their players. But the article also answered some questions that several people have had about the missing Mexican allocated players.
There have been several questions about whether Alina Garciamendez would play in the NWSL or not. It was rumored earlier in the year that Garciamendez would not be playing in NWSL. These rumors began when Garciamendez went to Germany to try out for F.C. Frankfurt, which was successful seeing as how the article confirms that Garciamendez has indeed signed a contract with F.C. Frankfurt. Unlike the other current players playing in Europe she will not be joining the Washington Spirit later in the season.
Rubi Marlene Sandoval will not be joining the Portland Thorns due to the fact that she could not recover fast enough from her surgery. According to the article Portland decided that Sandoval be cut from the team because of her injury. The article also says that because of Sandoval’s injury the Portland Thorns felt that she was not an option for them.
Players Luz del Rosario Saucedo (Portland Thorns) and Marylin Diaz (FC Kansas City) lost their allocation spots due to the fact that they both scored low on their fitness tests that the Mexican Women’s National Team technical staff issued. The staff determined that Saucedo and Diaz were not physically suitable to play in a professional league.
The mystery of the missing Mexican allocated players has finally been resolved and the rosters are now set and it is time to play some amazing fútbol! The NWSL season has officially begun!
