The NWSL inaugural year semi-final play-off games are ready to get underway this weekend as Sky Blue FC will battle it out with the regular season champions, Western New York Flash. The game will take place at Sahlen Stadium in Rochester NY. The Flash earned home field advantage after defeating the Boston Breakers 2-1 last week, also putting them in first place. Sky Blue FC is currently in fourth place following a 1-1 draw against the Washington Spirit in their last regular season game.
This Saturday’s game will be the fifth meeting for Western New York Flash and Sky Blue FC this year. Despite SBFC defeating the Flash in week 1 of the season, they have not been as successful in their following matchups which included two 3-0 shut-outs and a 2-1 loss. Still, Sky Blue should be providing a challenge to Abby Wambach and the rest of the Flash as they try to advance to the finals. Sky Blue FC has proven their solid defense and dynamic goal keeping. In addition, their versatile roster of game-changers has also had a positive impact throughout the season. This includes the current NWSL player of the month (August), Monica Ocampo, who had three goals in three games including a game winner against the Washington Spirit.
Although Western New York Flash may have a slight edge based on current standings and previous match-ups, Sky Blue FC still has the potential and opportunity to come out strong and earn a necessary win, with perhaps a few surprises, in what could arguably be their most challenging game of the season.
