It was a chilly and rainy evening in Kansas City, but that didn’t stop the 4,064 fans in attendance from cheering on FC Kansas City to the franchise’s first win in the NWSL, a 2-0 defeat of the Seattle Reign FC.

FC Kansas City played a very up-tempo and offensive minded first half against the aggressive defense of the Reign on what was a pretty fast pitch even with the steady rain.

In the 21st minute FC Kansas City got on the board as Sinead Farrelly, playing her first match of the season, headed home a corner from Lauren Cheney to put FCKC up 1-0. Farrelly told the KC Star after the gave that she “was at the right place at the right time. I just tapped it in. I actually didn’t even know it went in, but I started celebrating.”

Cheney got her second assist of the match, this time playing a long ball to the speedy Renae Cuellar who broke away from two defenders and tucked a shot into the corner. It was Cuellars league-leading second goal of the season. Cheney stayed modest after the match saying the pass was actually her trying to clear the ball.

Seattle Reign FC won’t have to wait too long for a rematch as the two will face-off again this Saturday in Seattle. Kick is scheduled for 11:00pm EDT.

“I’m going to be honest, that was just a clearance, I was really lucky the ball went there,” confessed Cheney. “I was just trying to keep possession, I kind of had an idea where she was but that was just a clearance. Luck! I told my teammate on the way back, Sauerbrunn asked ‘Chen, pass or clearance?’, and I was like ‘total clearance.’”
