Week three of the NWSL is upon us and we get the first taste of Friday night lights as FC Kansas City takes on Seattle Reign FC tonight at 7:35pm CDT.
FC Kansas City is coming off an unscheduled off-week as their match against the Boston Breakers was postponed due the events in Boston. In their first and only match of the season almost two weeks ago, FCKC held its own against Portland Thorns FC dominating on the offensive side during the first 45 minutes. The speedy Renae Cuellar put FCKC on the board just three minutes into the match by running down a pass by Leigh Ann Robinson and slipping it by Karina LeBlanc. The second half was a different story as the Thorns adjusted to FCKC’s fast paced offensive minded game-plan and ended up tying the match in the 67th minute on a penalty kick by Christine Sinclair.
Seattle Reign FC on the other hand is coming to Kansas City after a hard-fought 2-1 loss against the Thorns. The NWSL Player of the Week Jessica Fishlock provided some much needed energy and physicality for the Reign that seemed to have difficulty containing Sinclair as it seemed their main focus on defense was to shutdown Alex Morgan. After conceding two goals in a span of six minutes on the field, Fishlock cut the lead in half by placing the ball inside the right post after a collision in the box between Seattle midfielder Keelin Winters and Thorns defender Rachel Buehler.
What to Expect
After having an almost perfect opening night weather forecast for FCKC two weeks ago, tonight looks like a different story with rain likely and first kick temperature hovering in the mid-50s. FCKC’s plays on a multi-use artificial surface at Shawnee Mission District Stadium which should keep the match moving at a pretty steady pace that favors FCKC.
Look for FCKC to continue their offensive minded game-plan against the Reign with Cuellar leading the charge at forward. However they will need to bring another speedy player into the mix as the Reign showed in their match against the Thorns the ability to shutdown (for at least part of the match) Morgan. We might see FCKC switch from a 4-5-1 to a 4-4-2 and bring either Desiree Scott or Kristie Mewis up to play next to Cuellar to open up a few more options. Another option off the bench would be either Melissa Henderson or Erika Tymrak.
The Reign on the other hand will need to continue their physical play that in the rainy conditions tonight could really be a game changer. Fishlock leads the league as the most fouled player while also ranking third in committing the most fouls (6). This style of play is what kept the Thorns in their match against FCKC during the second half and seemed to slow down the pace of the game.
“KC has proven to be a tough side, so we expect tonight’s match to be a real battle,” said Laura Harvey, GM and Head Coach of Seattle Reign FC. “Starting the season with three road games is a challenge, but it can’t be an excuse. We need to find a way to leave with three points from the match.”
2-1 FCKC with goals coming from Cuellar and Lauren Cheney for Kansas City and Fishlock for Seattle.
