Congratulations to Chicago Red Stars forward Alyssa Mautz on being voted NWSL Fans’ Choice MVP for Week 16 for her performance against the Portland Thorns FC.

To keep their playoff hopes alive, the Chicago Red Stars needed to come out of Portland with at least a point and Mautz made sure of that.

Coming off the bench to replace an injured Lori Chalupny in the 18th minute, Mautz played a very aggressive first half and the team headed into the locker room down 1-0 to the Thorns.

The Thorns Meleana Shim put Portland up 2-0 just nine minutes into the second half but Mautz was ready to answer. Just five minutes later Mautz found the back of the net to cut Portland’s lead in half and energize her teammates. However the Thorns scored seven minutes later and the lead was back to two goals with 28 minutes left to play.

Mautz found the back of the net again in the 75th minute off a great pass by Rachel Quon to bring the Red Stars back within one goal with 15 minutes left in the match. Just like her first goal of the match, the Red Stars looked to gain some much needed second half energy and tied the match in the 86th minute. The match ended in a 3-3 draw and Chicago left Portland one-point closer to securing a post in the NWSL Playoffs.

Final voting for week 16:

1) Alyssa Mautz (CHI)
2) Megan Rapinoe (SEA)
3) Courtney Jones (FCKC)
4) Christine Sinclair (POR)
5) Rhian Wilkinson (BOS)
