It may not have been the three points they were looking for but the Seattle Reign and Chicago Red Stars each come away with one point in a 1-1 draw in their inaugural NWSL match.
Seattle got on the board early in the game with a cross from Liz Bogus that was headed into the back of the net by midfielder Christine Narin in the eleventh minute. The Reign could not hold the lead though, letting the Red Stars tie the game in the 23rd minute, when Ella Masar flicked a cross into the box that Lori Chalupny blasted up into the net off a half volley.
With the score drawn at 1-1, both teams picked up the intensity level, letting play get much more physical. Jessica Fishlock of Seattle and Chicago captain Leslie Osborne each received a yellow card before the half.
The Red Stars saw much of the possession with midfielders Zakiya Bywaters and Chalunpy connecting with forward Lauren Fowlkes but could not find the final pass into the box with a physical Seattle defense and midfield, led by Kaylyn Kyle, thawing their attack.
Seattle missed much of their attack without forwards Lindsay Taylor and Tiffany Cameron. Taylor is tending to an eye injury she received during training and Cameron is completing her studies at Ohio State.
Chicago had their chance to put the game away off a couple of attempts throughout the second half but were never able to find the back of the net. Their best chance came off a breakaway by Jessica McDonald but she was unable to beat Michelle Betos, who was in goal for the injured Hope Solo.
These two teams will not meet again until June 29th, but have plenty of games till then. Both teams will face the Portland Thorns next, Chicago at home on April 27th and the Reign will travel back to Seattle to play their rivals to the north on April 21st.
