The Chicago Red Stars and Western New York Flash generated very different results in their last NWSL games. Western New York had a standout performance over FC Kansas City that earned Abby Wambach NWSL Week 5 Player of the Week while the Red Stars suffered a disappointing lose at home to the Portland Thorns.
The two teams are on different courses with Western New York continuing to gain momentum after a shaky start to their season. On the other hand the Red Stars have done little to change their NWSL standing, shuffling between 7th and last place and in search of their first win.
Both teams could see a change to their staring rosters as players on both benches have come in that could potentially affect the starting lineups.
In the Flash’s 2-1 win over FC Kansas City two weeks ago, midfielder Carli Lloyd made her NWSL debut, after missing the first five weeks with a broken shoulder bone. Despite playing only 26 minutes, Lloyd had the second most shots (3) and shots on goal (2). Could this be the week she gets her first start?
The Red Stars are still without midfielder Shannon Boxx who underwent knee surgery in the beginning of the month and co-Captain Leslie Osborne, who has remained in Chicago to nurse a minor MCL sprain suffered in the May 12th match against Portland. The Red Stars might also be without starting goalkeeper Erin McLeod is recovering from a fractured metacarpal in her right hand she suffered back on May 4th in Boston. McLeod traveled with the team to Rochester but is listed as questionable for the match.
Red Stars head coach Rory Dames stated they “are a team that wants to win this league” and they will get another crack at it tonight at 7:05pm EDT.
