Get ready for the start of a brand new league! The NWSL kicks off this Saturday. On Sunday, Washington Spirit starts the season away to go head-to-head against the Boston Breakers. Neither team has had much of a chance to get into a rhythm, National Team members have been gone most of the time, and the official rosters for the league were only released a few days ago. Whatever the results, it’s bound to be an interesting first match up.

The Defense: The Breakers took a hit early, with defender Heather Mitts retiring, leaving them less experience on the backline. Hopefully, Canadian defender Rhian Wilkinson can help bring some leadership. They have also signed previous Breaker, Cat Whitehill. Their goalkeeper, Cecilia Santiago, allocated from Mexico’s National Team, seems to be brimming with talent, but she is still young. Washington Spirit has allocated player Ali Krieger, who has plenty of experience on the National Team and playing in Germany. They also have Candace Chapman and Robyn Gayle from Canada in the defense. With these three national players and Ashlyn Harris, another United States allocation, in goal, their defense could be unstoppable.

The Midfield: The Breakers have picked up both speed and experience with Heather O’Reilly, while the rest of their midfield is comprised of young, promising talents. Watch for O’Reilly’s trademark runs and see if she, and the rest of the midfield can get behind Spirit’s intimidating defense. Spirit has picked up allocated players Lori Lindsey and Diana Matheson for their midfield. Overall, it seems that Spirit has made some rather defensive picks.

The Attack: Breakers have allocated Sydney Leroux. Combine her speed with O’Reilly’s and they have a good chance of pressuring the defensive nature of Washington Spirit. They have also allocated Adriana Leon from Canada. What the Breakers may be lacking in defense, they have added in attack. Washington is relying more heavily on young talent. Caroline Miller has a lot of experience behind her though.

Overall, it’s hard to say who will come out on top this game. The season is just starting and there isn’t much pre-season statistics to look at. The Breakers lost to Sky Blue FC and Spirit played various colleges with mixed success. There hasn’t been much time for the players to understand how they play with each other. Washington seems to have a good defense, and Boston has more offensive players. This game may come down to once chance. The team that manages to get into rhythm first will emerge the winners.
