The Western New York Flash announced today that star forward Abby Wambach will miss the team’s home opener as a precautionary measure.
The Flash will host the Boston Breakers on Saturday, April 27th at 7:35 EDT, at Shalen Stadium.
Wambach was injured in the 80th minute of her team’s 1-1 draw against the Washington Spirit, after being hit in the face by a ball struck by teammate Brittany Taylor. While she remained in, she looked dazed late in the match and went down on the pitch following the final whistle and was attended to by medical staff.
While there was no immediate word whether she had suffered a concussion, Western New York head coach Aaran Lines said she was, “not doing well.”
“She got peppered in the face from point-blank distance,” said Spirit goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris. “I could tell she was pretty dazed. I said, ‘Are you all right?’ She was mumbling. That’s not a good sign.”
In a release today, the team stated, “Wambach is progressing each day, but will be taking the necessary steps to ensure a full, healthy recovery.”
Wambach will be in attendance at Saturday’s match and will give an interview at half time, according to the release.
Western New York will next host Sky Blue FC on Wednesday, May 1st at 7:05 EDT. Wambach may be available for this match, depending on her condition.
